VIDEO: Why bookmakers have Floyd Mayweather 1/5 to beat Conor McGregor

  • Mega fight between Mayweather and McGregor set to take place on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada
  • Mayweather strong favourite to win the bout

Largely lauded as the most anticipated fight in boxing history, undefeated boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather (49 fights, 49 wins, 26 by way of KO) takes on current UFC lightweight Champion Conor McGregor in a contest in which both fighters are set to pocket close to $100 million each.

For that reason, the fight has been billed as ‘The Money Fight’ in which no one can lose.

Will age play a part?

There can be no denying that Floyd Mayweather is arguably boxings greatest, a bold statement and one that is forever up for debate, but based purely on his 49-fight unbeaten record and the fact that he is an eleven-time five-division professional boxing world champion, the American certainly has a substantial claim.

Whereas Mayweather’s boxing talent is no way in doubt, neither is mixed martial arts world champion Conor McGregor’s ability inside a UFC ring.

28-year-old McGregor is currently the UFC Lightweight Champion and has also been the Featherweight AND interim Featherweight champion of the world, however boxing is a different kettle of fish.
As the video below shows, Mayweather appears lightyears ahead in out and out boxing talent so McGregor may have to rely on his younger frame to outlast Mayweather.

At 28, McGregor is 12 years Mayweather’s junior although based on the video evidence, you may be forgiven for thinking it is the opposite with Mayweather looking like a spring chicken straight out of college, not a seasoned veteran in mid-life.

What do the bookies say?

Understandably, the book-makers have been quick to put the American boxer as favourite for the fight.

Although due to McGregor’s unknown ability inside the boxing ring and his undoubted fighting talent, Mayweather is not as short odds as one may have thought when the fight was first mooted as a possibility.

There is a certain trend across the betting landscape with Betfair Casino and Paddy Power Casino the best priced option at 1/5 for the Mayweather win.

Although that does not necessarily represent much value, it does represent the most likely outcome, although McGregor’s unpredictability could be worth backing ranging from 4/1 even as far as 6/1 we found with Black Type Bet.

Method of Victory

In UFC, there are a maximum of five rounds with each round able to last up to five minutes, speed is of the essence whereas boxing can often be likened to a violent game of chess in the early rounds whilst each opponent attempts to locate a weakness.

If McGregor is to have any chance of victory, you sense he will have to KO Mayweather quickly, that seems a highly unlikely scenario and Mayweather’s boxing skill and patience will undoubtedly pull through with a round five or round six knockout.

Whatever happens on August 26th, the only thing that will get severely damaged is someone’s pride, however, with close to $100m in the bank, I think a little hurt pride is a small price to pay.
