Darts has seen a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years, and the move is indicative of the growing relevance of the sport.
To announce the deal, Unibet released a hidden camera-style video spoofing off-the-wall sponsorship ideas, as they proposed a series of outlandish publicity stunts to some of the world’s best dart players.
Michael van Gerwen and Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright were both asked their opinions on everything from head tattoos to special dances.
In addition, the PDC announced that the Premier League, which kicks off in Dublin on the 1st of February 2018, will see a new location added to its tour, with a stop-off in Berlin as well as the usual venues the UK, Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands.
“Darts has been one of the fastest growing sports in our sponsorship portfolio in the UK and we are extremely excited about extending our partnership with the PDC to become the new sponsor of the Premier League”, said Ebba Ljungerud, CCO of Kindred Group, of which Unibet are a part.
“It’s grown to become the widest-reaching event in darts and we’re looking forward to 16 exciting nights across Europe. Darts is an action-packed betting sport and we will continue to bring our best-in-class activation and offer to all the fans. “
PDC Chairman Barry Hearn, who has been credited with much of the revival of the sport over the past few years, added: “We’re delighted that Unibet have furthered their association with us in their sponsorship of the Premier League for the next three years.
“The Premier League’s growth since 2005 has been a phenomenon in British sport and it’s another boost that Unibet were so keen to add this prestigious event to their growing darts sponsorship portfolio.”
