It was announced on late last week by Mitchel Etess, the president and chief executive of Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, that the company plans to start building its new casino in the East Asian nation very soon.

‘Well into the planning stages’

In a statement, Etess said: “The company is well into the planning stage of its Korean joint venture, Project Inspire, where we anticipate breaking ground before the end of calendar 2017.”

The tribal casino operator first signed a deal with South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corp back in May and established a consortium for the project along with IIAC and South Korean chemicals manufacturer KCC Corp.

Whilst work will start before the end of the year the project isn’t expected to be finished until three or four years’ time and will include a 20,000-square meter casino with 250 gaming tables and 1,500 slot machines, a three-tower luxury hotel complex with 1,350 guest rooms and a Paramount Studios-themed amusement park.

Part of a resort complex

The casino complex is being built as part of the construction of the Inspire Integrated Resort in Incheon, with the company stating that its capital expenditure for the resort totalled $14.6 million for the nine months that ended in June 30.

The project in Incheon marks the first casino plans for the Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment outside of the USA, with the tribe currently operating Mohegan Sun casinos in Connecticut and Pennsylvania as well as venues in Atlantic City, Washington and Louisiana.

Their first foray into a foreign gambling market continues to show the increased growth and expansion of the gambling operator, who recorded a 68.1 per cent increase year-on-year to reach $43.8 million for the three months that ended June 30.
