Popular action heroes have been filling the reels of casino slots for a couple of decades now. With a strong following that these characters enjoy, casino game developers have noticed an opportunity to grab their slice of the pie, creating a bunch of games based on such themes.
Two slots we’ll be taking to the head-to-head battle today are stellar examples of this.
Games we’re talking about are Microgaming’s Terminator and Playtech’s Robocop, two slots that came from the same general line of thought, but quite different in terms of what they offer to the players.
Graphics & audio 5/5
Microgaming’s Terminator II is the older of the two games. However, as is usually the case with movie-themed slots developed by this company, the game looks quite impressive, with dark and metal overtones and reels filled with the original film characters we all know too well.
Creating paying combinations containing featured characters triggers mini cut-scenes from the movie, with everything being accompanied by the original soundtrack.
If you enjoyed Terminator II, this slot is guaranteed to jog your memory and perhaps inspire you to watch the movie again.
In-play features 5/5
Terminator II is a 243-way slot, meaning that all symbols pay from left to right as long as they are on adjacent reels, i.e. there are no traditional paylines.
Free spins are triggered by three or more scatters and during the bonus round, reels will extend, creating 1,024 pay ways. Additionally, the T-1000 symbol can transform into any other character symbol to create the best possible wins, which is a really nice touché.
Furthermore, Terminator II also comes with the coveted “hot mode,” best described as free spins on steroids. The feature is triggered randomly at the start of normal free spins and can be recognized by the burning, orange color around the letters and in the background. Hot mode seems to add many more premium symbols to the reels, which means this is when huge hits can really come knocking.
The return to player (RTP) of Terminator II is pretty decent, at 96.62%. This is a bit higher than your average online slot, so even in this department the game stands out.
You’ll be able to play for a while without busting your roll and, hopefully, trigger a few features in the meantime.
Winning potential 5/5
When the game has 1,024 ways to pay, with additional wilds in the free spins and the hot mode booster, it is clear it can pay huge.
Terminator II is one of those slots that you can grind for a while without any huge hits, but one day when it does happen, landing a combo paying 1,000+ times your stake is not at all unrealistic.
Overall value 5/5
Whether you are a fan of the Terminator franchise or not, this game brings everything a decent casino slot requires: great graphics, cool features, and a big winning potential – all of it combined with more than decent RTP.
If you haven’t had a chance yet, it is definitely a high time to try your luck with Terminator II.
Graphics & sound 5/5
Playtech’s Robocop slot is based on the 1987 cyberpunk movie about a half-human, half-robot cop on the mission to restore peace and justice on the streets of Detroit.
The slot features large, bright symbols, with original movie characters, police cars and shields, and special weapons. Reels are set on the backdrop of the city and spin really fast, accompanied by laser-like sounds.
Also, we must mention several cut scenes that play at the start of bonus features, really adding to the experience.
In-game features 5/5
The Robocop slot features 25 paylines and the game is also rich in features. There are four different bonus games players can choose from when three police shield scatter symbols land on the reels, featuring large or extra wilds and win multipliers, as well as a special click-and-pick game.
Additionally, all of the bonus features can also be triggered randomly during the base game. Thus, there is always something to keep an eye out for.
Robocop features an RTP of 96.24%, and anything above 96% is pretty good. Terminator II is slightly better in this regard, but not substantially so. Both games are not super high variance and you’ll get plenty of spins on Robocop as long as you aren’t going crazy with the bet size compared to the size of your bankroll.
Winning potential 4/5
The best full line on Robocop pays 25 times the stake, but there are potential multipliers that can boost certain lines up to 5x. However, with only 25 paylines and the mega wild and multipliers appearing in separate features, the winning potential of this game is somewhat limited.
This isn’t to say that you can’t win big, just not Terminator II big.
Overall value 4.5/5
All in all, Playtech’s Robocop is a slot that provides an entertaining gameplay and numerous features to keep you above the water. Nice graphics and good music also add to the overall enjoyment.
However, the game doesn’t seem to have a potential for those huge wins, which can reduce its appeal slightly, especially with some players.
Our verdict & where to play
Although both of these slots are really good in every aspect, Terminator II takes the win in this race for its bigger potential and because it does look a bit better.
That said, if you prefer Robocop, you won’t be leaving any value on the table, as those huge wins don’t come around as often.
