NetEnt is no stranger to creating slots based on popular fairy tale characters, with their Jack and the Beanstalk being the most popular game from the genre.
Their Fairy Tale series of games continued down the tested path, releasing two titles: Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel.
Both slots have many of the similar elements, but designers made sure to give them some unique features to set them apart.
Fairy Tale Legends: Red Riding Hood
Graphics & audio 4.5/5
Set on a backdrop of a magical forest during the night, the Fairy Tale Legends: Red Riding Hood slot sets a proper story atmosphere, with the entire experience further boosted by gentle, calm music playing every time you spin the reels. Birds chirping and owls howling round things up, white little Red Riding Hood carelessly strolling along the reels, on her way to visit sick grandma.
In-game features 5/5
The Red Riding Hood slot features 20 paylines on the standard 5×3 grid, and quite a few of features to keep players interested.
There are sticky wild re-spins, three random features with magic fairies appearing out of thin air to boost your winnings, as well as two different bonus rounds. Apart from the standard free spins round, there is Beware the Wolf bonus, which is a mini-game in its own right, both interesting and with some potential for big wins.
Fairy Tale Legends: Red Riding Hood features an RTP of 96.33%, which is pretty much standard for NetEnt slots. There are a few better ones out there and a few worse ones, but overall, this is your average casino slot in terms of returns.
Winning potential 3.5/5
You can win a decent amount and medium wins can come frequently thanks to many features, but this isn’t the kind of slot that can spit out a payout worth few thousand times your stake.
All in all the Fairy Tale Legends: Red Riding Hood slot is a game with very nice design and many entertaining features that should keep you spinning for a while without decimating your bankroll.
It is unlikely to make you rich unless you go on a crazy run, but it can provide hours of quality fun without having to risk too much.
Fairy Tale Legends: Hansel & Gretel
Graphics & audio 4/5
In a visual sense, NetEnt didn’t change too many things when designing the game sequel.
Fairy Tale Legends: Hansel & Gretel features almost the same background and exactly the same music as Red Riding Hood.
Even some of the symbols are the same, like the Fairy Tale legend logo and the bonus chest. While the desire to remain consistent is understandable here, it feels like the designers could have done a bit more to make this game stand out.
In-game features 3.5/5
One important difference between these two games is the fact Hansel & Gretel only features 10 paylines, but wins are paid in succession, regardless of where the line starts. The game also comes with three random fairy features which are pretty much the same as in Red Riding Hood.
The free spins round is also identical, while the other bonus feature is different, as the slot is based on a different fairy tale after all. The Candy House bonus is pretty much the standard click-and-pick game and it isn’t as entertaining as the Beware the Wolf mini-game.
Although nearly identical games, these two slots have slightly different RTPs, and Fairy Tale Legends: Hansel and Gretel wins in this category with an RTP of 96.71%.
Not much, but small differences matter and some players really look out for a decent RTP.
Winning potential 3.5/5
Everything we said about Red Riding Hood pretty much applies to Hansel & Gretel as well, with the added fact that the latter has half as many paylines.
High RTP and frequent small to medium wins, sometimes referred to as low variance or volatility will keep you entertained, but don’t expect this game to drop a massive, head-spinning win, because the possibility simply isn’t there.
Overall value 4/5
Fairy Tale Legends: Hansel & Gretel is basically a replica of the Red Riding Hood slot, with a slightly higher RTP and somewhat lower potential for big wins.
It is a nice and entertaining game, but if you had already had a chance to play the first one, there isn’t much new Hansel & Gretel brings to the table.
Our verdict and where to play
Both these games come very much from the same stable – and both offer similar gaming experiences.
If you want slighly more consistent wins, then plump for Hansel & Gretel. But for sheer thrill, then Red Riding Hood probably takes the crown here thanks to its Beware the Wolf bonus round which really adds to the experience – and win potential.
