- Barcrest’s Rainbow Riches takes on Quickspin’s Leprechaun Hills
- Both these Irish-themed slots are incredibly popular but which is best?
And, if we’re talking about luck, is there a more famous variety than the luck of the Irish? So, in this edition of the head-to-head we’re going to take a closer look into two slots featuring this very theme, namely Barcrest’s Rainbow Riches and Quickspin’s Leprechaun Hills.
Graphics & audio 3.5/5
The game’s theme helped it win the hearts of the players even if it wasn’t a masterpiece in terms of visual elements. Being an older slot, Rainbow Riches features fairly simple graphics without any elaborate animations.
Symbols on the reels represent well-known notions, such as Leprechauns, pots of gold, lucky coins, and wishing wells. Overall, the slot isn’t particularly impressive to look at, but we must consider the fact the game was initially released in 2006, debuting at online casinos in 2009.
In-game features 4.5/5
For a slot that has been around for over a decade, Rainbow Riches comes with a rather impressive number of bonus features.
First of all, there is the Road to Riches bonus, triggered by three or more Leprechaun symbols. It will take you on a cash-filled adventure, where you can fill your pockets with gold.
Then, there is the Wishing Well bonus, which is a classic click-and-pick bonus. Finally, there is the entertaining Pots of Gold feature, where players can win up to 500 times their stake.
Rainbow Riches features the RTP of 95%, which is a bit low for today’s standards but, once again, it was fairly common at the time the game was launched. Furthermore, the game was developed primarily for land-based casinos, and it is no secret that land-based slots are usually not as generous as those aimed at online audiences.
Winning potential 3.5/5
With 20 paylines and the only stacked symbol paying 12.5 times the stake, Rainbow Riches clearly isn’t one of those games with a huge winning potential.
However, the Pots of Gold bonus feature can award up to 500x your stake, which is the best possible win from a single round. The bonus feature isn’t that hard to trigger, either, which certainly helps.
Overall value 4/5
While Rainbow Riches may not live up to today’s standards in many of its aspects, it remains one of the legendary titles, especially in the UK.
It is one of those slots that don’t need a huge jackpot or flashy graphics to attract players. They simply come back to it despite all the new games for the reasons that are hard to explain. That certainly adds some points to the total.
Graphics & audio 5/5
Quickspin’s Leprechaun Hills came long after Rainbow Riches, and game developers had access to all the tools of the modern technology.
They clearly took the full advantage of this fact, creating a visually beautiful game set on the backdrop of magical green hills. Traditional Irish music playing in the background adds to the overall feeling, just like symbols such as Leprechauns, pots of gold, shamrocks, etc.
In-game features 4/5
Like many Quickspin games, Leprechaun Hills slot features a larger 4×5 grid and 40 paylines. Symbols are stacked on the reels, creating room for some big wins.
There are two main features in this slot. The first one, called Lucky Respin, happens in the base game. Whenever there is a win featuring a medium-value symbol, the feature is initiated, giving player one free spin with that particular symbol super-stacked on the reels.
The other feature, called Rainbow Free Spins, is triggered by three bonus symbols landing on the reels. During the feature, the mystery Rainbow symbol is active, and it can turn into any medium-pay symbol to boost the winnings.
The Leprechaun Hills slot features a fairly high return to player RTP of 96.51%, although the game can be classified in the group of higher variance slots. That said, the game is certainly neck to neck with most modern slots in terms of the RTP, which is certainly a big plus.
Winning potential 4/5
Although it features 40 paylines, with no multipliers of any sort, the maximum winning potential of Leprechaun Hills is somewhat limited. The game can still pay just above 1,000 times the stake on a very lucky spin, but that’s as high as it goes. This is still a big payday, of course, but there are quite a few slots these days offering much bigger potential wins.
Overall value 4.5/5
If you enjoy slots featuring leprechauns, shamrocks, and good Irish music, you’ll definitely love Leprechaun Hills. The game may not have the potential to pay huge and features aren’t that exciting, but the slot is definitely well-designed and can offer a lot of great entertainment.
Our verdict & where to play
All factors considered, we must give a slight advantage to Leprechaun Hills, simply because the game looks much better and has a higher RTP.
Of course, this doesn’t mean anything if you’re someone who’s used to playing Rainbow Riches and are in the group of the players who simply choose to love the game. After all, we all have one or two of those older slots that we’ll always pick over any of the modern-day, fancy shenanigans.
If you’re signing up for the first time, make sure to also take advantage of generous bonuses offered by all of these casinos and seize your share of good luck from the very first moment you join!
