It took 16 years of waiting after the release of Return of the Jedi to finally see The Phantom Menace and the start of a new Star Wars trilogy sequel.
At the time, people were just so delighted to see the franchise reborn that they could forgive the fact that the film wasn’t actually any good (in this writer’s opinion, of course).
But it begs the question, why, given that the Phantom Menance was a huge box office smash, did it take them so long?
Here’s a few slots that surely deserve the follow up treatment.
It’s fair to say that this slot has been pretty successful for developers NetEnt. Despite its 2010 release (yes, that’s eight years ago) it still looks and plays very fresh. And that cinematic intro sets up the gameplay very nicely, as we meet our hero the Spanish Conquistador Gonzo.

In the free falls round, activated by three free falls symbols, the multiplier could get up to 15x.
So, after all these years, where’s the sequel? Maybe it’s because Gonzo is still performing well, NetEnt don’t feel the need to rush out with a follow-up. We have seen a VR version which looks great, but a fully fledged new edition is what we’re looking for.
WHERE TO PLAY: Gonzo’s Quest is available at heaps of online casinos, but some of our recommended places to try would be bgo Casino and Power Spins Casino, where you can get free spins with zero wagering requirements.
If there was a slot to rival Gonzo’s Quest in terms of sheer ubiquity, most would probably identify Starburst.
It frequently ranks as the most played slot in online casinos and is probably in large part due to the fact that many free spins offers are tied to the game.
What makes it popular is its simplicity. It is a basic, and fairly laid back slot in its appearance and soundtrack, with a basic ten paylines.
There’s nothing here that would scare off the traditional slot machine or pub fruit machine player – or to be honest – someone who has never spun the reels in their life. And perhaps that’s exactly the point.
There’s the chance for a 50,000 coin win, but it also pays fairly frequently, although not always with big multipliers.
This game is now seven years old and is starting to look its age.
There’s no reason why NetEnt couldn’t reimagine this slot, while staying true to its simplicity, but maybe adding a couple of bonus rounds for interest, and maybe giving it a better setting than its current rather nondescript look and feel.
Still, if imitation is the ultimate form of flattery, then the amount of Starburst clones out there suggest that this slot still has plenty of life left in it.
WHERE TO PLAY: This slot is available almost everywhere, but why not try 888 Casino for a decent gaming experience.
Book of Ra Deluxe
Ok, so this is already a sort of sequel, to, you guessed it, Book of Ra.
But since Book of Ra Deluxe was released in 2008 – it could be felt that ten years is more than long enough to wait for a follow up to this Greentube slot.
This game still captures the imaginations of many slot fans today thanks to his high variance. That means that wins on this slot come infrequently, but that can come big. I mean, 500,000 coins big.
This Indiana Jones-style slot keeps players coming back because of the high value bonus feature. The free games with the special expanding bonus symbol can really help rack up the wins, and the game is relatively easy to trigger.
That said, the game does look its age, and some of the audio is very dated.
What would be great is an up to date Book of Ra with some cool bonus features, involving Indiana Jones-style swashbuckling set pieces with giant boulders, pits of snakes and evil spirits from ancient times.
But it would be crucial to keep that high volatility and the promise of some exciting wins, else the essence of the slot would be lost.
WHERE TO PLAY: Book of Ra Deluxe can be played in its current form at Casumo Casino.
This crossover slot has been popular in both land-based venues and online casinos.
Released in 2015, Raging Rhino is known for its high variance.
On release it was known as a pioneer of the 4,096 ways to win format – which although sounds like it will pay out frequently, actually results in a highly volatile slot.
The African Savannah setting and the possibility of some big wins has seen players return to this again and again.
It has a free spins feature, triggered by the diamond symbol, which can award up to 50 free spins, during which the same symbol can trigger more free spins.
The game is still fairly basic and is crying out for an update. Perhaps a Rhino rampage feature where the rhino gets loose in a bonus feature and crashes into symbols which award prizes, multipliers or free spins?
Maybe the call of the wild will convince developer WMS to revisit this classic.
WHERE TO PLAY: Have a go yourself at Virgin Games.
