Paddy Power brings ‘pants exchange’ to athletics World Championships

  • A number of athletes at London’s World Championships struck down with norovirus
  • Prompts Paddy Power to offer money back on sick runners and hand out underwear at the event

In a move that may have surprised some punters, Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has placed an advert in the London Evening Standard promising health insurance.

No, the online casino and betting operator hasn’t diversified its service offering – not just yet, anyway. Instead, it’s the latest marketing stunt by the brand that jumps right on the Athletics World Championships that are currently taking place in London.

‘Clean pant’ exchange

At this year’s event a number of athletes have fallen ill with the norovirus, including Botswanan runner Isaac Makwala who, unfortunately for him, was forced to pull out of the 400m final. The good news is that, if you’ve placed a bet with Paddy Power on an athlete who’s been struck down by the norovirus, the bookmaker has got your back – your money back to be precise.

But that’s not all. In typical Paddy Power fashion, the operator has also promised a ‘clean pant’ exchange for any athletes who soil themselves after getting ‘stomach problems’.

And it’s no empty promise either. The bookmaker has made good on its word, going so far as to set up a stand outside London’s Olympic Park handing out clean pants to affected athletes.

Pants at the Championships

This all sounds very silly, but no sillier than Paddy Power’s other stunts which have included erecting a large figurine of Theresa May flicking the bird at Europe from the white cliffs of Dover and also re-chalking the Cerne Abbas giant so that it was seen holding a tennis racquet for the launch of Wimbledon. Handing out a few pairs of pants at the World Championships seems pretty tame in comparison.

For punters intent on betting on the IAAF World Championships, regardless of the threat of the norovirus ruining everything, there are some attractive odds to be had. Forthcoming events include the men’s 1500m, 200m, decathlon and triple jump and there are also plenty of women’s events to look forward to including the 800m and high jump.

In the men’s 200m which is held this evening you can get odds of 5-4 on Jereem Richards or 5-2 on South Africa’s Wayde Van Niekerk being first over the line.
