- The N1 billion Jackpot Lotto will launch on October 18
- It is believed to be Africa’s biggest lottery
Nigerian football hero Kanu Nwankwo has announced the launch of what is being described as Africa’s biggest lottery competition.
The N1 billion Jackpot Lotto will support the Kanu Heart Foundation (KHF) which was founded in 2000 and has helped not only Nigerians, but has also paid for 538 children around the world to get treatment for their heart conditions. Kanu is hoping that the jackpot will raise sufficient funds to build a special cardiac hospital in the Nigerian capital Abuja.
The jackpot will start with a N1 billion prize fund and will be staged alongside the existing AfroMillionsLotto, offering twice-weekly draws with larger jackpots than all of the current lotteries in Nigeria combined. It is also believed to be the largest jackpot in Africa.
The first draw will take place on Wednesday October 18th and if nobody wins the jackpot, the prize money continues to roll over, rising by N100 million each draw until it reaches its maximum level of over N2 billion.
A fifth of the proceeds from every ticket sale will go to the KHF to help the organisation continue working to ensure that underprivileged African children with heart problems get the help they require.
Speaking at the launch, former international football star Kanu outlined his hopes for the new lottery and encourage Nigerians to take part:
“We are excited to launch this major fund-raising initiative for the Kanu Heart Foundation and hope people support it by buying tickets, helping us to build a new heart hospital for Nigeria. Not only could people change their own life with the potential to win the jackpot of over N1 billion, they can help to change the lives of other people by supporting our Foundation”.
Kanu famously suffered from a serious heart defect, which was identified while he was playing for Ajax in the Netherlands and corrected with surgery in 1996. He went to make 404 appearances in club football and played 87 times for Nigeria.
