Although a number of luxury accommodation units, named Somerset Jeju Shinwa World, were unveiled in what was described as a ‘soft opening’ in April, the site does not yet have casino gaming.

In a statement to the press, the developer – Landing International of Hong Kong – said that the December opening will see the launch of a number of facilities, including a Landing-branded hotel, exhibition and conference areas, a shopping facilities and eateries.

The company also announced that the site would have an operational casino, although this is expected to be a temporary casino facility rather than the large-scale gaming capacity that is due to be unveiled in 2018.

Temporary basis

Back in August, Landing said that it had been contemplating moving its current land-based casino operations based at the Hyatt Regency Jeju Hotel across to Jeju Shinhwa World on a temporary basis, ahead of the completion of the site’s permanent casino facilities, which are expected to be ready by the end of 2019.

It is planned that between now and the December opening date a number of new facilities at the site will be unveiled, including a family-friendly theme park that will be based around 15 rides and YG Town, a bar and café run by well-known entertainment agency YG Entertainment, which works with a number of South Korean entertainers, including many of the country’s most famous K-pop performers.

Eventually, the site will also include a second theme park – Lionsgate Movie World – and another hotel facility in the shape of the Four Seasons Resorts and Spa.

The project was initially a joint affair between Landing and the Malaysian casino giant Genting Casino, but Genting sold its half-stake in the project in November last year when it became clear that the South Korean government did not intend to lift its ban on casino gambling for South Korean nationals.
