- Japanese gambling series debuts to Western audiences this year
- Animated show based on Kawamoto’s original comics
Streaming site Netflix has licensed a second series of popular series Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, fans of the show were told at a recent convention for the manga serialization.
The high school gambling animation is expected to launch for Western audiences later this year, while Japanese fans who enjoyed the first season are eagerly awaiting news of the second series’ release date.
The show has been a surprise hit for Netflix, despite not yet reaching Western audiences. Anime fans in Europe and North America will have to wait until later this year for their first look at Kakegurui – but with a second series already in the pipeline, eager viewers already know they can expect a top quality show when it finally arrives.
Series demonstrates social hierarchy based on betting
“There is one absolute rule in gambling — at the end of the day, there is a winner and a loser,” the Netflix description of Kakegurui reads. “The winner gains riches and prestige, while the loser is branded a failure and left with nothing.”
Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler is based at a prestigious boarding school in Japan, attended only by the very highest members of society. The future elite have developed their own culture of illegal gambling within the school – often for very high or very dangerous stakes. Losers of the school’s betting games serve the winners until they can pay off their debt, and the games are often rigged by players to gain unfair social advantage.
However, life at the school is shaken up when student Yumeko Jabami transfers. The enigmatic young girl makes friends and enemies through her highly unorthodox approach to the school’s gambling-based hierarchy. Yumeko is a compulsive gambler, skilled at fixing bets in her own favor, and willing to put up her fortune and life for the thrill of the gamble.
“At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer,” English language producer Yen Press explains. “When Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!”
