- New movie about ‘Princess of Poker’ Molly Bloom
- Film covers rise and fall of convicted poker room manager
A new film by Aaron Sorkin details the incredible life and times of celebrity poker room operator Molly Brown, who welcomed VIPs to exclusive underground poker games and was ultimately convicted of racketeering.
Bloom herself attended the premiere of Molly’s Game in Toronto last week, having received special permission from Canadian authorities to enter the country. The movie will be available on general release from November.
Jessica Chastain stars in poker drama
Sorkin makes his directorial debut with Molly’s Game, which stars Jessica Chastain as Molly Bloom. Idris Elba and Michael Cera also appear, as Bloom’s lawyer and client respectively.
Stars who were known to play at Bloom’s exclusive poker club, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, are not featured in the film. Instead, Cera and others represent the high profile clients who visited the Beverly Hills Hotel club.
The movie charts Bloom’s rise and fall within the poker scene, from her beginnings as an LA cocktail waitress to her assumption of power at the head of a powerful gambling ring – and her subsequent arrest and conviction. It hints at how Bloom may have taken the fall for her most powerful VIP clients, when allegations of Russian mob links dogged the underground poker operation. The film is sympathetic towards Bloom, and portrays her as an unlikely heroine who was dealt a very difficult hand.
Real Molly Bloom “emotional” after seeing movie
Having admitted her guilt in a federal charge, Bloom needed special permission to enter Canada and attend the Toronto Film Festival last week. Authorities approved a 48-hour visa so the former Poker Princess could see her life story on screen as part of the audience, alongside her family.
“After the movie, they were as emotional and infusive as can be,” said Sorkin. “Both Molly and her father, for me, if that’s all that had happened, it would have been enough.”
Sorkin’s biographical films certainly pack a punch, with The Social Network picking up best screenplay at the Oscars, but his portrayals of known figures are not always flattering. Mark Zuckerberg was said to dislike the ‘sensationalized’ movie version of Facebook’s rise. However, there is certainly plenty of glamour and sensationalism to be found in the life of Molly Bloom already, making her the perfect subject for Sorkin’s first directorial effort.
