With more than 6,500 players taking it to the green felt, it was Maria Lampropoulos who outlasted everyone and ended up with all the chips in front of her, earning a cool £1 million ($1.28 million) for her outstanding performance.

Attracting a huge crowd

Guaranteeing a prize pool of £6 million ($7.67 million) in total and £1 million for the winner, partypoker was able to create a huge buzz for their Millions event that went down between April 18 and yesterday (April 23).

More than 6,500 players found their way into the event in Nottingham, looking for their share of good fortunes.

The Millions event was structured in a unique way, with various feeder tournaments running since October last year. Those who wanted to qualify had an opportunity to do so via various live and online satellites, which offered seats for the final event at Dusk Till Dawn.

Road to victory

Anyone who’s ever played in a poker tournament will tell you that navigating your way to a final table is anything but easy. No matter how good you play, one bad beat can cost you everything you’ve spent hours or days to build. If you’re playing a tournament with more than 6,000 players, the number of landmines you’ll have to find your way around increases exponentially.

However, Maria Lampropoulos weathered all the storms and avoided all the traps, to find herself sitting at the coveted final table yesterday, together with seven other hopefuls, with all eyes fixed on that seven-figure first place.

However, in the end, there could only be one winner, and everybody else would have to seek their opportunity at a different final table. One by one, players left their seats, with Neel Murthy busting out first, followed by Katie Swift and a well-known UK pro Stephen Chidwick. The trend continued with Jon Spinks who was eliminated in fifth, followed by Mateusz Rypulak in fourth and Jeremy Pantin in third.

The final hurdle

With Pantin’s exit, Lampropoulos was left facing her last obstacle in Jacob Mulhern. Although Mulhern felt good about his chances, it wasn’t meant to be for the 24-year old, as cards fell Maria’s way and in the end, she was crowned the partypoker Millions winner. Mulhern wasn’t too disappointed about his runner-up finish, though, as he pocketed £650,000 ($831,000) for his efforts.

As for Maria Lampropoulos, her victory was good for £1 million, which is the biggest score of her career by far. Her total live earnings are now over the $1.6 million mark, and her career certainly seems to be going in the right direction.
