SINKING FEELING: Jacks or Better casino poll asks Facebook if captain should keep his job

  • Texas-based casino ship hit harbour buoy a week after launching
  • Controversial Facebook message about captain that has since been removed

Texan casino cruise ship Jacks or Better Casino set sail in early April and received a positive response from guests at its launch. It runs daily from Galveston with six-hour cruise sessions and has a range of casino table and card games on board – as well as entertainment and refreshments.

However, the ship sailed into troubled waters this week, when a minor accident became a major social media frenzy after the casino company added a strange message about their captain to Facebook.

Casino cruises: the law

Texas is not one of the 30 states in which gambling is permitted. However, casino operators in states with prohibition have long skirted the rules by offering their games on the open waters, where the state’s laws are deemed invalid.

The Mississippi casino riverboats of the early 20th century are among the most well-known floating casino venues, though many states have their own interpretations of the casino cruise. Now Texas is offering its own modern take on gamblers‘ cruises with its 100-passenger casino boat on the Galveston River.

Jacks or Better Casino hits marker in bay

An early accident is not what any new cruise ship wants to happen, but just one month into service, the Jacks or Better Casino has suffered minor damage following a collision with a concealed harbor marker.

The 100 passengers were returned to the shore uninjured and without further incident, though the ship is docked for repairs and currently out of action.

The captain of the boat spoke out with an apology to passengers, though the company and Coast Guard are working together to make the hazard safer and prevent future accidents. “I am truly sorry for scaring you, putting you and the vessel in peril and hope in the future you will come back to the Jacks or Better once she is back in service,” said Captain David Kendrick in a statement.

Viral frenzy after Jacks or Better poll

The story would have ended there, with the casino ship resuming service as soon as it is declared safe to do so. However, the response from Jacks or Better on social media has caused the story to blow up.

On an official Facebook page, they posted a poll which asked whether or not they should fire the captain: causing an immediate backlash from their followers and the wider social media community. Jacks or Better has since deleted their message and stated that they were seeking support and reassurance for their captain.
