Hollywood A lister Kevin Costner shuts down Deadwood casino

  • Costner sold 100 acres of land near Deadwood to a hospitality investment group for $7.5 million four years ago
  • Casino boasted Kevin Costner memorabilia as well as a host of slot and table games

Hollywood star Kevin Costner famed for roles in films such as Waterworld, Dances with Wolves and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves has (with a heavy heart) shut the doors on his casino Midnight Star in Western South Dakota in the town of Deadwood.

Costner opened the land-based casino in 1991 due to his love for the area, in particular the Black Hills of South Dakota and because of “their historical importance in our country’s story.”

Why the closure?

After 26 years of operation, the announcement that the Midnight Star shut its doors for the final time on Tuesday has left 40 full time and part time resort staff looking for a new job and the closure is believed to be linked to Costner’s sale of land he owned located near Deadwood.

Four years ago, the 62-year-old actor listed a 1000 acres of land he owned for $14 million with Deadwood Hospitality Resort, L.L.C buying up 100 acres of the property for a reported $7.5 million just last year. However, what DHR LLC plan on doing with their acquired land remains to be seen.

Also, during the 2000’s, the availability of more modern gaming facilities left the somewhat ageing Midnight Star out of the limelight despite its A-lister owner.

What was on offer?

The Midnight Star was a rustic old style casino very much in keeping with the style of the historic Deadwood town.

A large quantity of Costner’s acting memorabilia was on display along with a substantial Bar and Grill to keep you going through your play.

The casino floor boasted games such as blackjack and three card poker tables along with a host of slot games such as Top Dollar, Wheel of Fortune and Hall of Fame.

What next for the property?

Costner released a statement saying: “I will be eternally grateful for the dedication and hard work of all of the management and staff at the Midnight Star.”

However, the star of the hit 90’s film the Bodyguard failed to reveal any planned sale of the Midnight Star property itself.
