Gonzo’s Quest is one of those NetEnt’s slot games that has earned the legendary status among the players, although not everyone understands what all the hype is about.

Seeing this popularity, Microgaming, another leading casino games developer, figured they should have their own Gonzo-like game, and came up with Jungle Jim: El Dorado.

These two games are very similar in all the aspects, from graphics to gameplay, but aren’t identical copies. From a player’s standpoint, which one should you go with if you’re feeling in a mood for some treasure hunt adventure?

Gonzo’s Quest

Graphics and audio 4/5

Set in the depths of a Central American Jungle, Gonzo’s Quest features rich, colorful graphics with various stone-carved faces appearing as symbols on the reels. Gonzo himself is always there on the side of the reels, making funny gestures and letting out some rather ridiculous sounds, which will make you fall in love with this little fellow.

The only thing that developers could have done better was making the game a bit faster, because exploding symbols sometimes linger on the screen just a bit too long.

In-game features 4/5

Funny little dude aside, it is probably the gameplay that made Gonzo’s Quest so popular. In the base game, the slot features exploding symbols and multipliers increasing with each win. The maximum multiplier players can reach is 5x and it will remain active for as long as there are winning combinations on the screen.

Once the free spins round is triggered, things get much better, as you’ll start with a 3x base multiplier, with the potential of going all the way up to 15x.

The only downside is that free games aren’t that easy to trigger, so it can take a while and most bonuses are moderate at best, with a few big ones thrown in the mix.

RTP 4.5/5

Gonzo’s Quest features a 96% RTP, which is standard for most NetEnt and other slots available out there.

The game isn’t in the group of the highest paying slots by any means, but the RTP is certainly quite decent.

Winning potential 3.5/5

The thing with Gonzo’s Quest is that it is hard to win big, at least from most players’ experiences. While big wins don’t come around as often, the potential is certainly there, especially in the bonus round where there is a possibility of a 15x multiplier.

A couple of good falls in a row with premium full lines can result in a very big payday.

Overall value 4/5

Gonzo’s Quest is definitely one of the slots that can offer a lot of entertainment and some nice wins along the way. With a decent RTP and a lot of potential in the bonus round, this game is hard to leave once you get started.

However, free spins don’t come that often, which can be a bit frustrating, so Gonzo’s Quest might not be the right game for you if patience isn’t your strong suit.

Graphics & sounds 4.5/5

From the visual stand point, Jungle Jim certainly looks a bit better than Gonzo’s Quest, which is somewhat normal considering the slot was released a few years after the game it draws its inspiration from.

Symbols on the reels feature sharper colors and the whole game has a nicer 3D feel to it. Jungle Jim is there on the side of the reels, offering his support, but he isn’t as hilarious as Gonzo, so that one is down to your preference.

In-game features 4/5

In this section, Jungle Jim is pretty much identical to Gonzo’s Quest, with the only difference being that Microgaming’s version features 25 paylines as opposed to 20 lines in NetEnt’s original.

Other than these, there’s the free spins feature with exploding symbols and growing multipliers, up to the maximum of (surprise-surprise) 15x. It feels like it’s a bit easier to land the feature in Jungle Jim, but this isn’t something we have any hard evidence for.

RTP 4.5

Jungle Jim: El Dorado features a slightly higher RPT of 96.31%, which isn’t anything to get overly excited about, but it does mean the slot offers a bit more play on average.

Once again, anything over 96% is more than good when it comes to slots, so there is nothing bad to say about this.

Winning potential 3.5/5

Everything we said about Gonzo’s Quest applies to Jungle Jim in terms of potential winnings.

The game can pay big on occasion, but landing a truly impressive win is not an easy thing to do. If you’re up for chasing big wins, there are better slots to do it on.

Overall value 4/5

Jungle Jim: El Dorado is Gonzo’s Quest with somewhat nicer graphics. All in all, whether you play Microgaming’s or NetEnt’s game is pretty much down to the personal preference, as these games are quite similar.

You’ll probably enjoy Jungle Jim a bit more simply because it looks nicer and the gameplay is a bit faster.

Our verdict and where to play

If this had been a race it would have been a close one, we are sure it would have gone right down to the bitter end. But the better graphics are what pushed Jungle Jim to a narrow victory over Gonzo’s Quest. Both slots offer decent payout rates and engaging bonus features but Jungle Jim’s thrilling graphics and gripping sound effects helped it over the line in first place.

If you are thinking about giving Gonzo’s Quest or Jungle Jim El Dorado a spin we recommend that you head over to Casumo Casino for a fantastic playing experience; they also offer players a huge range of progressive slots and quick payouts.
