  • Gladiator slot returns for long-awaited sequel with Road to Rome
  • Free spins round and Gladiator Bonus offering progressive jackpot

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, released in 2,000, was an instant classic, full of memorable lines and scenes.

Gladiator Road to Rome is a great improvement on the already quality original.

Slot developer Playtech’s incarnation of the classic movie came a full eight years later, and was also something of an instant classic among players.

That was followed by a big progressive jackpot version of the game in 2012, which has already changed lives with some huge seven figure prizes dished out.

And now, perhaps not before time, we see a follow-up – Gladiator, The Road To Rome, which suggests Playtech believes there’s still mileage in the old film yet.

But does it improve on the original?

How it plays

Don’t expect any cinematic cutscenes from the film – this slot puts you straight in to the action, and immediately you are confronted with a much-improved gameboard on the original, with slicker visuals, characters from the film and a Colosseum-style background.

The set up is a 5×3, 25 payline gameboard with a progressive jackpot and an RTP of 95.05%.

That means the megabucks really are on offer, even if, of course, the chances of actually winning are very small.

Needless to say the player is faced with the usual playing card symbols, plus characters from the film, including Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), Proximo (Oliver Reed), Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus himself as the top payer, and potential wild symbol if it lands fully stacked.

There is a scatter symbol which triggers the Colosseum free games round if three or more show up on the reels. Three gets the player five free spins for three scatters, and more if more scatters land.

Enter the arena

Get those scatters and the player prepares by picking a shield before ‘doing battle’ in the arena, which simply gives the player a certain modifier before taking on the free spins.

The Gladiator Bonus Round offers the chance for a progressive jackpot.

There’s 12 shields, and the player gets to pick three.

Those modifiers are more free spins, a win multiplier, a symbol payout boost, turns one symbol wild, a symbol can act as a scatter and an expanding wild.

The Gladiator Bonus when triggered will also get the player fired up.

Nine iconic Gladiator helmets appear in a combination of bronze, silver and gold, and should nine gold helmets show up, then the progressive jackpot is yours.

And here, you do get a cutscene from the film of the gladiators cheering their success.
