- Westside City Resorts World will open in Manila in 2020
- Genting Hong Kong see revenues dip following tragedy
Genting Hong Kong Ltd has confirmed that it will open a new Manila casino property in 2020, GGRAsia reports, in collaboration with Travellers International Hotel Group Inc.
The new property will be a second joint venture in the city for Travellers and Genting after the Resorts World Manila casino resort.
Both groups reported losses during the first half of 2017, attributed largely to the events of June 2 when a fatal shooting and arson incident at Resorts World closed gaming tables for a prolonged period.
Genting has also seen spending rise this year, as the group has been investing in casino properties and also in casino cruise ships. Travellers and Genting will both look to this new Manila venture as a way to boost their profits in the Philippines.
New casino should open doors in 2020
A statement from Genting on Thursday said that the new casino project is on schedule and should meet its 2020 opening target, reports GGR.
The Westside City Resorts World will form part of the Entertainment City in downtown Manila, and will include four integrated resort properties with hotels and casino tables.
The Solaire Resort & Casino and the City of Dreams Manila already occupy space within the E-City, along with the newly opened Okada Manila.
Close to the resort site will be the upcoming build Westside City, which will feature a number of hotels and entertainment venues.
The Westside City Resorts World will cover a total of 76 acres, and the $1.1 billion project will include 1,500 hotel rooms – doubling their current potential occupancy in Manila.
Losses reported after difficult year for operators
It will have come as no surprise to Genting or Travellers when losses were recorded for the first half of the year.
Genting did experience an increase in revenues based on 2016’s figures, though it wrote down a net loss of $202.2 million overall.
This is due to the closure of Resorts World Manila for a significant period.
The city casino was subjected to a sustained attack by a lone gunman in June, who set fire to tables and caused a serious blaze that killed 37 people. Following the tragedy, the casino was closed for several months and tables on the affected floor will remain closed indefinitely. Gaming operations have now resumed at the casino venue as it makes its journey to recovery.
