- Betway announced as official chief sponsor of the ESG Tour
- Major eSports tournament kicks off on September 7 in Mykonos
Betway’s involvement provides further evidence that eSports is entering the big league, with major prize money up for grabs. Eight of the world’s best eSports teams will go head-to-head in CS:GO as they compete for the £200,000 prize pot.
$1.3 billion eSports market
Betway’s involvement with the tournament, which is being hosted in the Aegean party island of Mykonos, comes to many as little surprise, given that it recently announced a partnership with the ESL Pro League. With eSports tipped to be a $1.5 billion market by 2020, operators have been scrambling to gain a foothold in the increasingly lucrative sector.
Betway can stake a claim dating back to 2015 when its eSports microsite was established. As members of the Esports Integrity Coalition, the gambling operator is a familiar face within the game.
When the tournament kicks off in Mykonos, Betway will be on hand to provide live updates on the latest odds. “We can’t wait to see how the world’s best teams perform in this unique and exciting tournament location next week,” said Anthony Werkman, the firm’s Director of Marketing.
“Our latest partnership is a continued sign of our commitment to the esports industry, as we look to become increasingly involved through team and competition sponsorship, backed up by our unique and exclusive live odds feeds into the broadcast.”
Betway big force in eSports
Betway holds a Malta gaming licence as well as one issued in the Isle of Man where it is based. After opening in 2006, the company went on to enjoy rapid growth around the time that eSports was taking off, and by 2015 was in charge of one of the web’s top ten eSports betting sites.
Customers can bet on a wide range of esports tournaments including Dota 2, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm and League of Legends. It’s CS:GO that tends to attract the most money and generate the most excitement come tournament time however.
As the eSports leagues continue to flourish and more money pours into the market it could drive other operators to potentially put their name to high profile events like the ESG Tour.
The Mykonos International 2017 as it’s known, will mark the first time that all of the tournament’s players have competed in the same physical location. Despite having chosen a stunning location in The Destiny Villa overlooking the Aegean Sea, all eyes will be on-screen when the action unfolds on September 7th
