Bookmakers SLASH Royal baby odds after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement

  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement was announced by Clarence House on Monday
  • Bets being taken on when Miss Markle will fall pregnant, with 2018 the favorite
  • Other bets offered including the wedding venue and the location of the stag do

UK bookmakers have responded to the news of the latest royal engagement by slashing the odds of Meghan Markle falling pregnant next year.

They've stopped taking bets on the Prince Harry Meghan Markle wedding.
Patter of tiny feet? Bets already being taken on Miss Markle falling pregnant.

On Monday, Clarence House revealed that Meghan had become engaged to Prince Harry and that the wedding will take place in spring 2018. The announcement caused bookmakers to cut the odds on a Meghan pregnancy in 2018 from around 9-1 to Evens.

Bookmakers had been anticipating the royal engagement since February this year, when they cut the odds on such an eventuality to Evens. They also slashed the odds that they would be married in 2017 to 10-1, with the same price on Meghan falling pregnant this year.

But punters backing a Meghan pregnancy in 2018 may be jumping the gun. After Harry’s brother William married Kate Middleton in April 2011, it was another 20 months before St James’s Palace announced that Kate was pregnant with their first child in December 2012. George Elek, a spokesperson for odds comparison website Oddschecker said that the market had provided clues to the timing of the engagement.

“They’ve only been engaged for five minutes but punters are already hoping for the pitter-patter of tiny royal feet on the corridors of Buckingham Palace,” he said.

“The markets told us to expect news of an engagement soon, although just 14 bets were placed on the Oddschecker site for a 2017 proposal.”

Wedding venue

Bookmakers are also running a number of other markets on the upcoming wedding. In terms of timing, a May wedding is favorite at 2-5, while April – the month in which William was married – and March are both priced at 9-2. Windsor Castle is a very short-priced favorite as wedding venue at 1-29 with Westminster Abbey at 5-1 and St Paul’s Cathedral at 6-1.

Punters can also back Harry to be clean shaven on his wedding day at 6-4, and there’s a wide open market on the location of his stag night. Las Vegas is the current favorite at 10-1, with Barcelona and Berlin at 14-1 and Amsterdam and Prague at 16-1.

Betfair and Paddy Power are offering odds, as well as Betfred.
