Football and the leading online casinos may not appear to have many similarities but actually quite the opposite is true. Both require an ability to hold your nerve, be on your game at all times and sometimes just accept defeat and walk away.
However, probably the most common theme between the two is that they are ram packed with money and not afraid to spend it to get recognition around the world as we take a look at some of the biggest casino-related sponsorship deals in the beautiful game.
Fulham – Betfair
Okay granted this is nowhere near as large as the others below but it makes the list because it was the first shirt sponsorship in the English Premier League history to feature a betting company.
The year was 2002 and the team was Fulham, back then Betfair Casino were a local operator with huge ambitions and the one-year deal set the tone for the future of the betting exchange.
Although the financial details of the deal were not revealed, it is expected it was one of the smaller deals in the Premier League at the time.
However, Fulham and Betfair set the tone as more and more online bookmakers soon entered the fray with 45% of all teams boasting a betting firm as their title shirt sponsor this season.
SportPesa – Everton
Everton have a shirt sponsorship deal in place with online sports betting and casino operator SportPesa.
The deal is worth £9.6 million a year to the Toffees and although it is small fry to some of the bigger deals listed below, but it makes our list as it is the clubs most lucrative ever sponsorship deal and still worth a pretty penny to the Merseysiders.
SportPesa run gambling operations in Africa as well as having a substantial presence in the UK and view the association with Everton as a way to further enhance the brands reputation.
Bwin – Manchester United/AC Milan
Bwin Casino are a well-known Austrian head quartered sports betting and online casino, however, of your reading this you probably already knew that.
The bookmaker/casino have a strong affinity with involving themselves in high profile deals with some of the biggest clubs.
Most people tend to associate them to their time sponsoring Real Madrid as shirt sponsor and although that was a heavyweight deal ($25.9m per year to be exact), it pails into nothing when compared to the business the bookmaker did one April day in 2006.
During that month, Bwin signed a four-year deal with Italian giant’s AC Milan to be their main shirt sponsor in a deal worth $12,250,000 a year to the Rossoneri.
The very same day, the online casino also did a deal with Manchester United to become their official betting partner and agreed to pay a whopping $24.5 million per year.
That took Bwin’s total expenditure on high profile football sponsorship to an eye watering $36,750,000 per year.
Spor Toto – Turkish League
You will be forgiven for asking who the hell are Spor Toto?
Well, they are a government run betting operator and in 2010 agreed a deal to sponsor three of Turkey’s top four sides which created the Turkish Spor Toto Super League.
The deal set them back a total of $125 million which equated to $25m per year and one of the largest deals of all time involving a gambling firm.
