Joachim Timmermans is a leading figure in online casinos having worked in senior positions on both the operator and supplier sides of the industry. He co-founded Quickspin in September 2011 and is the Swedish slot supplier’s chief product officer. Prior to that he spent nearly six years as head of casino and games at Unibet.
Can you tell us a bit about Quickspin and what the company has to offer?
Quickspin is a Swedish games development studio that was founded in 2011 with a very simple philosophy: ‘We love slots!’ And that’s because we will always be players first and developers second. It’s a philosophy that has taken us a long way, especially as we’re now one of the leading real-money content providers. Our success was the main reason why Playtech acquired the business in May 2016. We now have a 60-strong team of highly-experienced industry professionals, whose aim is to create the most innovative and immersive video slots available on the market.
You recently launched a new Achievements Engine for your games. What was the thinking behind that?
Gamification has been a buzzword in the online casino industry for many years, but we wanted to do something unique. This led us to developing our new Achievements Engine, which allows players to engage with slot games more than ever before by letting them complete level achievements, in a similar manner to social games. It’s a fairly simple tool, but one we believe will be hugely effective as players love the feeling of fulfilment that ticking off levels gives them. The benefit for operators is that it will help to create a more engaging experience for their players.
How does the Achievements Engine work?
The engine makes use of six unique game events that take place across all of our slots, such as when a scatter appears or when a player has a win with two wild symbols, and rewards players with Quickspin Tokens for achieving them. Achievements are set over four levels, and pay out at each level. Players can then cash-in their tokens to trigger the game’s bonus feature, which is usually free spins but could also be re-spins, side games, and so on. Players can track their progress, as well as claim and collect their reward on a designated page within each Quickspin game. It’s easy to understand and drives entertainment value and fun by giving back part of a player’s spend.
Do you think gamification tools such as your Achievements Engine will become the norm in the industry?
We genuinely believe this will be a game-changer and that these tools will become the industry-standard in the near future. The benefits of a more satisfing user experience are too big to miss out on. They create more loyalty and a highly engaging and fun environment for players.
“We love slots. And that’s because we’ll always be players first and developers second. It’s a philosophy that has taken us a long way.”
How else have you looked to improve your product offering in the previous 12 months?
We’ve released a number of new games this year, the most recent being Sakura Fortune, which was the first to include the Achievements Engine. The 4×5 reel, 40-line slot follows the journey of a beautiful heroine through an enchanted world of cherry trees and golden dragons, as she battles evil emperors on route to riches. It follows on from Leprechaun Hills, which is already proving very popular, and other blockbuster games such as Hot Sync, Phoenix Sun, and Dragon Shrine. And you can be sure to expect more titles from Quickspin in the coming months, with several new releases in the pipeline.
Finally, what does the future look like for slots?
Slot development has a very bright future. As more territories begin to regulate and embrace online RNG games, including Asia, the popularity of slots will only grow. The quality of games is also improving, with ourselves and other suppliers bringing exciting new concepts to the industry. It’s crucial that we continue to innovate as a business and provide players with fun games they want to play that include dynamic and engaging features that both enhance gameplay and the over user experience as well as create further loyalty and retention. Players are not short of choice out there, but the cream will always rise to the top.
